When Did You Last Do Something Just Because You Wanted To?

You don’t always need a reason to do something for yourself.

You don’t always need a reason to do something for yourself.

When was the last time you did something simply because you wanted to?

Not because it needed doing. Not because somebody was relying on you. Not because it was on your to-do list.

Just because you fancied it.

Perhaps it was sitting down with a cup of tea while it was still hot. Picking up a book you’d been meaning to read. Wearing the colour that caught your eye. Taking the longer route home because the sunshine was lovely.

Nothing particularly grand. Nothing that needed planning.

Just something that made you feel good.

It’s funny how easily those little moments can disappear from our days. We become so accustomed to thinking about what needs doing, who needs us and what comes next that we can forget to ask ourselves a very simple question.

What would I actually like to do?

And sometimes, when we finally stop long enough to ask, we don’t immediately know the answer.

That’s okay, too.

You don’t have to make a grand plan to rediscover the things you enjoy. You don’t need to book a holiday, buy something new or completely rearrange your life.

Perhaps you simply need to notice the little things that bring you pleasure.

The music you love listening to. The flowers you stop to look at. The outfit that makes you smile when you catch your reflection. The quiet moment when nobody needs anything from you.

These things might seem small, but they are reminders that your days belong to you, too.

And here’s something worth remembering: you don’t have to earn every moment of enjoyment by first getting everything else done.

There will always be another job, another responsibility or something else that could be done.

You are allowed to enjoy a moment in the middle of it all.

So, perhaps today, instead of asking yourself what needs doing next, ask yourself something different.

What would I like to do, just because I want to?

You might be surprised by the answer.

And if you can’t think of anything straight away, don’t worry. There’s no deadline for figuring it out.

Sometimes, simply asking the question is a lovely place to begin.
